The mean serum concentration of calcium and inorganic phosphate in patients with Blount’s disease was not significantly reduced when compared with the control subjects (Table 1). There was a significant increase (p<0.05) in the serum alkaline phosphatase activity in patients suffering from Blount’s disease, compared with the control subjects. The slight decrease in serum concentration of copper in Blount’s disease, compared to the control subjects was not statistically significance. However, the serum zinc concentration was significantly reduced (p<0.05) in patients with Blount’s disease compared with the control subjects.

The mean serum levels of all the parameters studied were compared between the male and female patients with Blount’s disease, and the values are as shown in Table 2. Male Blount’s patients had their mean serum calcium concentration slightly reduced than that of female patients. However, this decrease was not statistically significant. The serum concentration of inorganic phosphate and alkaline phosphatase activities were similar between the male and female patients. Again, slight increases in serum concentrations of zinc and copper were observed in the male compared with the female patients with Blount’s disease.

A comparison of the mean serum level of all the parameters studied in male patients with Blount’s disease and male control subjects was made and is shown in Table 3. The difference in the serum concentration of calcium in the two groups was not significant. However, significant changes were observed in the serum concentrations of inorganic phosphate (p<0.05), zinc (p<0.05), and copper (p<0.05), with the higher concentration in male control than in male Blount’s patients. The observed increase in serum alkaline phosphatase activity in male Blount’s patients was not statistically significant.

There was no difference in the serum levels of inorganic phosphate in female Blount’s patients when compared with the female control subjects as shown in Table 4. The increases in serum concentrations of calcium and serum alkaline phosphatase activity observed in female Blount’s patients were not statistically significant when compared to the control subjects.
