There were some problems related to the calculations of heart rate. First, some recordings were distorted, particularly during running. The explanation for this is not clear, but may be related to faulty transmitters since it always occurred in the same animals. These poor recordings precluded valid comparisons of heart rate changes during running for a significant number of animals. RR variability is another factor that makes it difficult to interpret changes in heart rate. On several occasions, intermittent arrhythmia, as shown in Figure 6A, was observed. To assess RR intervals and day to day variability, RR intervals were measured from 38.4 s ECG samples, for four consecutive days in 11 CM hamsters aged 218 to 220 days. Parts of some signals were of poor quality and were excluded before analysis (the minimum number of RR measured per sample was 67). RR measurements were done using DADISP software on signals sampled between 8:00 and 9:00 h. As well, day to day coefficient of variation of heart rate varied from 4.6% to 26.7% among hamsters. RR variability at rest was not specific to CM hamsters since it was also observed in normal (CHF 148) hamsters (Figure 6B).
