Only three hamsters were still running during the two weeks preceding death; in those hamsters, death was presumed to be sudden. The increased body weight, occurring in the last four weeks before death in CM hamsters (Figure 2, bottom), was due to subcutaneous edema, which could be visually observed before death. Necropsy confirmed the subcutaneous edema and disclosed a complete absence of body fat. It was also noted that the average body weight of CM hamsters (range 137 to 154 g) was lower than that of normal hamsters (range 162 to 178 g) while their voluntary running performance was similar until the age of approximately 300 days.
Figure 3 shows the daily distance and total duration of daily running (from which average speed was calculated) for CM hamsters expressed from the time of death. Both the average speed and duration of running decreased with age.A typical ECG signal recorded at time of death from progressive heart failure is illustrated in Figure 4. In this case, the hamster showed persistent and worsening bradycardia of at least five days’ duration before death. In contrast, Figure 5 illustrates sudden death monitored in a CM hamster while it was running.
